What happened: CAG audit found widespread missing minimum amenities at rail stations
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) carried out an audit of passenger amenities and sanitation provided at Indian Railways stations. The audit reported persistent and widespread deficiencies in minimum essential amenities and also flagged inadequacies in accessibility infrastructure for persons with disabilities.
CAG audited 512 stations that handle long-distance passenger traffic (non-suburban stations with passenger traffic at least 150 km). The audit found:
458 stations (about 89%) lacked one or more minimum essential amenities.54 stations (about 11%) had no shortfalls in minimum amenities.
CAG listed several minimum essential amenities that were missing in many stations, including fans, water coolers, drinking water taps, urinals, seating, platform shelters, latrines and clocks.
