What happened: CAG audit found widespread amenity and sanitation gaps in Indian Railways stations

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) conducted an audit on passenger amenities and sanitation in Indian Railways. The audit covered 512 non-suburban stations handling long-distance passenger traffic and found that about nine in ten audited stations were deficient in at least one minimum essential amenity.

Amenity categories flagged by the CAG audit

The CAG audit reported deficiencies across multiple passenger-facing categories, including fans, water coolers, drinking water taps, urinals, seating arrangements, platform shelters, latrines, and clocks. The audit indicates that only a small fraction of audited stations had no shortfalls in these minimum essential amenity categories.
