What happened

After Rahul Gandhi’s Pune address titled “Chhatron ki Goonj,” BJP criticized Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha the next day. BJP framed Rahul Gandhi’s Pune event as unserious and challenged the credibility of the event’s participation.

BJP Maharashtra vice-president Keshav Upadhye alleged that Rahul Gandhi delivered “generic rhetoric” instead of addressing real concerns. Keshav Upadhye also alleged that attendance at the Pune event was “manufactured,” claiming that crowds were ferried using college buses.

Congress responded by saying BJP was “rattled” by Rahul Gandhi’s growing appeal among youth. Congress national secretary Sachin Sawant alleged an “unprecedented response” to Rahul Gandhi despite logistical hurdles attributed to state authorities and alleged that the ruling alliance was undercutting youth prospects in Maharashtra.

The dispute also turned to women’s rights messaging. Rahul Gandhi’s outreach to Gen Z women was framed by Congress as a call to “smash” patriarchy. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attacked Rahul Gandhi by alleging that Rahul Gandhi praised women’s empowerment while opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.
