What happened: education-led reintegration after release
Three Delhi case studies describe how former prisoners used education and training during incarceration and then received post-release support to restart their lives in society. The cases link academic progress and practical training to work opportunities and legal support roles, alongside mental health support and life skills.
Case study 1: Lakshman — seven-year Tihar imprisonment, smartphone learning, and functional literacy
Lakshman was convicted of murder and jailed in Tihar for seven years. After release, Lakshman learned to use a smartphone and pursued education that included Class 12 and a Bachelor’s degree, along with a functional literacy programme called “BetterLife Prison School”.
After release, Lakshman works with Project Second Chance through the TYCIA Foundation. The support areas mentioned include education, mental health support, life skills, and legal assistance.
Case study 2: Karan Kumar — 2017 school-fight case, Class 12 in prison, and paralegal work
