What happened

A special court set up to handle the NEET-UG paper leak case has taken cognisance (the court accepts the matter to proceed) of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chargesheet filed against 13 accused persons. After the CBI filed the chargesheet, the special court asked the accused persons to submit their responses.

Background and earlier position

In major criminal cases related to alleged paper leaks, the common workflow is investigation by an investigating agency, filing of a chargesheet in court, and then court-stage steps where the court examines the case and hears the accused persons as per criminal procedure.

What changed now

The special court’s action—taking cognisance and calling for the accused persons’ responses after the CBI chargesheet—moves the NEET-UG paper leak case forward from the chargesheet filing stage into the next phase of court processing.
