What happened: AFC joins UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing FIFA’s private investment plan
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) joined UEFA and CONCACAF in criticising FIFA’s proposed private investment plan. AFC stated that its concern had reached the point where a World Cup boycott entered public discussion.
AFC said it represents 47 nations and expressed solidarity with UEFA and CONCACAF. FIFA’s proposed process was described as an “open and democratic” consultation on the private investment plan.
In a separate but related development, FIFA senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro resigned. Carlos Cordeiro stated that he had no involvement in the proposal and opposed the plan as a bad deal for FIFA member associations and for the long-term future of football.
The dispute also includes a reported UEFA position to boycott the tournament if FIFA proceeds with the private investment plan.
