What happened in the Lok Sabha sitting
The Lok Sabha passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026 without debate despite loud Opposition protests and disorder during parliamentary proceedings. Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House at 11 a.m. due to disorder and the House reconvened at noon, with disorder continuing.
Opposition protests were linked by protesters to a police crackdown on student demonstrations at Jantar Mantar on July 20.
BJP MP Dilip Saikia demanded that listed papers be laid. The same Lok Sabha sitting also involved a demand for a deadline extension for a Joint Parliamentary Committee examining a Constitution amendment bill with an automatic removal mechanism tied to arrest and custody for 30 days on serious criminal charges carrying a jail term of five years or more.
Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai introduced the Births and Deaths amendment bill. The bill proposes that delayed birth and death registration beyond a fixed period would require prior approval from a judicial authority.
Opposition MPs demanded the Home Minister’s presence. Despite sloganeering, the Lok Sabha passed the bill by voice vote.
