What happened: Supreme Court directions for DNA testing and compensation support
The Supreme Court directed India’s Ministry of External Affairs to appoint a nodal officer to facilitate DNA testing of the mortal remains of Indian nationals reportedly killed on the frontlines of the Russia–Ukraine war. DNA testing is meant to identify the deceased so families can claim the bodies and perform last rites.
The Supreme Court also asked the Ministry of External Affairs to share the nodal officer’s details with families. The Court required that complete records needed to file compensation claims with Russian authorities be supplied to families. The Court further directed the provision of legal aid to families so they can submit compensation claims.
