Textile Waste Innovation Challenge – ‘What Is It Made Of?’

The Ministry of Textiles will launch the ‘What Is It Made Of?’ Textile Waste Innovation Challenge on the occasion of Weave The Future 4.0 – Upcycling Edition. The initiative is meant to encourage innovative, scalable and practical solutions to India’s growing textile waste challenge.

The announcement is important because textile waste is increasingly being discussed within the framework of the circular economy and sustainable consumption. Although the release does not provide waste estimates or policy details, it signals a government attempt to crowdsource ideas from multiple sectors.

What the initiative covers

The competition is open to participants from across India, including students, artisans and weavers, designers, researchers, entrepreneurs, innovators and citizens. The broad eligibility suggests an effort to combine technical, creative and community-based approaches.

The challenge is open to people in the 16–45 years age group. Eligible backgrounds include design, engineering, science, technology, communication, research, entrepreneurship, community development and systems thinking.
