Modernized post office operations illustration

The Department of Posts (DoP) is modernising post offices by deploying Advanced Postal Technology (APT) under the IT 2.0 Project, implementing Core Banking Solution (CBS), and expanding digital and parcel services. The policy relevance lies in how a nationwide postal network is converted into an interoperable digital channel for payments and last-mile logistics.

What happened (modernisation across post offices)

DoP modernization covers three linked areas: (1) end-to-end computerisation and network connectivity using APT, (2) banking interoperability via CBS to enable anywhere banking services, and (3) customer-facing digital services and strengthened parcel and logistics support for e-commerce.

The UPSC angle · GS1 · GS3

Technology-enabled postal modernization can be framed as a governance and service-delivery reform challenge: networked computerisation (APT/IT 2.0), banking interoperability (CBS), and digitised customer journeys (track-and-trace and digital payments). UPSC questions can test trade-offs around rollout capacity, service reliability, cybersecurity readiness, and how postal networks support e-commerce and financial inclusion.
