What happened

Indian Railways adopted a comprehensive mechanism for the collection, treatment and disposal of waste generated from trains and railway stations. The Railway Board issued a Solid Waste Management Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) aligned to the applicability of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 and to directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court. The SoP covers railway stations, trains, railway colonies, hospitals, workshops, production units and other establishments, with guidelines for segregation, collection, transportation, processing, scientific disposal, monitoring mechanisms and administrative responsibilities.

Operational measures included twin dustbins at railway stations for segregation at source, and collection of train-generated waste at nominated waste handling stations. Waste handling stations have tie-ups with Urban Local Bodies/Municipal Authorities for proper disposal. Indian Railways also established waste processing plants across different stations based on operational needs, including bio-gas plants, composting plants, material recovery facilities and plastic bottle crushing machines.

Solid waste management in India is governed through sector-relevant compliance expectations under Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, supported by monitoring and scientific disposal requirements. For the rail sector, waste flows typically originate from stations and onboard trains and then must be channelled into processing and disposal routes that can interface with municipal systems.

Prior to the Railway Board SoP described in the current announcement, the rail sector would have required standard internal practices for segregation, collection, and disposal arrangements. The current announcement indicates a move towards formal, detailed, station- and establishment-wise SOP coverage and structured coordination with Urban Local Bodies for disposal.
