What happened
In May 2022, the Central Government amended the export policy to make the export of bamboo charcoal “Free” to increase value addition in the bamboo sector and to improve profitability and livelihood opportunities linked with bamboo-based industries. In March 2023, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change released an “FAQ on Agroforestry” guide covering cultivation practices for 36 selected tree species suitable for agroforestry systems and home gardens.
Background and earlier position
Before May 2022, bamboo charcoal exports were governed by an export policy regime that was not “Free” under the amended position mentioned in the government communication. On the agroforestry side, farm extension guidance for cultivating tree species suited to agroforestry and home gardens relied on available knowledge sources; the Ministry’s March 2023 publication was designed to consolidate cultivation practices in an accessible format.
What changed now
Two parallel changes were reported: (1) export policy for bamboo charcoal shifted to a “Free” category in May 2022, and (2) the Ministry released agroforestry extension materials in March 2023, including a general “FAQ on Agroforestry” for 36 tree species and additional booklets focused on four commercially important tree species.
