What happened
The Government of India, through the Union Budget 2026-27, announced a plan to support States in creating University Townships near major industrial and logistics corridors. The Union Government aims to support States through the challenge route (a funding approach where States compete/submit proposals for specific outcomes), with a target of 5 University Townships in the vicinity of major industrial and logistic corridors. The Department of Higher Education then initiated a consultation process with relevant stakeholders, including State Governments, academia, and industry representatives.
