What happened (CBSE–NCERT curriculum finalization)

NCERT and CBSE finalized a dedicated Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence curriculum for Classes III–VIII, planned to start from the academic year 2026–27. CBSE also finalized curriculum for Grade 9–12 in Artificial Intelligence and allied subjects.

The Government-announced learning focus across grades includes Computational Thinking as a foundational competency that progresses in an age-appropriate way. The Grade 9–12 AI and allied subjects curriculum emphasizes logical reasoning, pattern recognition, algorithm design, data literacy, and responsible and ethical AI.

Background and earlier position (NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023)

NEP 2020 recommends increased emphasis on mathematics and computational thinking throughout school years. NEP 2020 also supports age-appropriate learning methods in the middle stage of schooling, such as puzzles/games and coding, to build computational thinking.
