Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the 44.40 km Mansi–Saharsa section in Bihar at a cost of ₹499 crore. The project is intended to expand line capacity on a corridor that is already under strain from heavy passenger and freight movement.
What existed earlier
The Mansi–Saharsa section of the East Central Railway is currently a single-line corridor. According to the Ministry of Railways, the section handles 24 pairs of passenger trains in each direction and also carries essential commodities such as wheat, maize, ballast, boiled rice, cement, fertilisers, rice, salt, sand, stone and sugar.
The Ministry of Railways said line capacity utilisation on the route has already reached 108.11% and is projected to rise further by 2028-29. That makes the corridor a clear case of capacity stress and operational bottlenecks.
What changed now
The approved doubling project will add line capacity on the route and is expected to improve the movement of both passenger and freight trains. The Ministry of Railways said the project will also improve operational efficiency, punctuality and flexibility on this busy regional corridor.
