TAG of Empowered Technology Group (ETG) meets; roadmap for telecom R&D and proposal for “Communication Technology Task Force”
Technology Advisory Group under the Empowered Technology Group discussed a national roadmap for telecom research and proposed a Communication Technology Task Force to coordinate indigenous capabilities, standards, manufacturing, and commercialisation.
- The Department of Telecommunications described Digital Bharat Nidhi as a funding opportunity for research, innovation, and early deployment of indigenous telecom technologies.
- The Telecom Technology Development Fund highlighted strategic technology areas that include 5G-Advanced/6G, Open RAN, satellite communications, cloud-native networks, and telecom semiconductors.
- The proposed Communication Technology Task Force is intended to guide national priorities and improve ecosystem-wide coordination in communication technologies.
The Technology Advisory Group under the Empowered Technology Group met on 10 July 2026 to shape a national roadmap for telecom research and development. The discussion is important because telecom is now a base layer for India’s digital economy, linking digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, industrial automation, and critical infrastructure.
The meeting examined how India can build indigenous capability across the telecom value chain. The focus areas were standards development, intellectual property creation, advanced manufacturing, resilient strategic supply chains, and faster movement from research to commercial deployment.
What the meeting discussed
UPSC may ask about the role of telecom research in digital public infrastructure, the importance of indigenous standards and standard-essential patents, or the policy instruments needed to move from import dependence to a competitive domestic telecom innovation ecosystem.
