The Indian Navy commissioned INS Mahendragiri, an indigenously built Project 17A stealth frigate, into the Eastern Fleet at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on July 11, 2026. The Ministry of Defence said the commissioning reflects India’s expanding shipbuilding self-reliance and the operational growth of the naval-industrial ecosystem.
The release places the commissioning in a continuing sequence of Project 17A inductions. INS Mahendragiri is the sixth Project 17A indigenous stealth frigate to join the Navy in a span of about 1.5 years.
Project 17A induction sequence
The Ministry of Defence listed the earlier inductions as follows: INS Nilgiri in January 2025; INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri in August 2025; INS Taragiri in April 2026; and INS Dunagiri in June 2026.
Design, build, and capability profile
The ship was designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai. The Ministry of Defence said the warship has more than 75 percent indigenous content, a displacement of about 6,670 tonnes, and a top speed of up to 28 knots.
