What happened

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Mahendragiri, its sixth P17A-class stealth frigate, at Visakhapatnam on 12 July 2026. The commissioning was held at the Eastern Naval Command headquarters with the Union Defence Minister present, and it marked a new stage in India’s capacity to design, build, and deploy advanced naval platforms independently.

Background and earlier position

The P17A programme belongs to India’s wider push for indigenous warship-building under Atmanirbhar Bharat. The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri reflects the continuing shift from imported dependence toward domestic capability in complex naval platforms.

What INS Mahendragiri adds

The frigate is described as a stealth-oriented platform with advanced technologies intended for high-intensity naval warfare.
