What happened

NITI Aayog launched the Roadmap for Building India as a Leading Bioeconomy Powerhouse by 2035 at the National Media Centre, New Delhi. The roadmap is a mission-mode strategy to position India as a leading global bioeconomy powerhouse by 2035.

The roadmap was developed by the NITI Frontier Tech Hub in consultation with the Department of Biotechnology, the Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises (ABLE), industry, academia, and other stakeholders.

What the roadmap proposes

The roadmap identifies biotechnology as a major growth engine for India’s next phase of development. The roadmap aims to move India from a trusted supplier of affordable healthcare products to a leading global bioeconomy power.

The roadmap projects India’s BioEconomy to grow from $10 billion in 2014 to $195.3 billion in 2025, equal to 4.8% of national GDP. The roadmap then sets targets of $691 billion by 2035 and $2.6 trillion by 2047, along with more than 30 million high-value jobs.
