What happened
A one-day meet titled “Science, Technology, and Innovation Need Identification for Sustainable Development of Kargil” was held on 15 July 2026 at Government Degree College, Kargil, Ladakh. The consultation was jointly organised by CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR), Unnat Bharat Abhiyan at IIT Delhi, IIT Jammu, and Government Degree College, Kargil.
The meet was part of the CSIR-NIScPR initiative “Leveraging CSIR Technologies for Rural Development: Expanding Initiatives and Identifying Opportunities”. According to the Ministry of Science & Technology release, the initiative aims to disseminate indigenous technologies developed by CSIR laboratories for rural development challenges across India.
Why Kargil was chosen
The Kargil region has potential in agriculture, horticulture, medicinal and aromatic plants, food processing, renewable energy, eco-tourism, and rural entrepreneurship. The Ministry of Science & Technology release also notes major constraints: geographical remoteness, harsh climatic conditions, and limited access to appropriate technologies.
