What happened
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has secured approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) to upgrade the Khagaria–Purnea section of NH-31 and NH-231 in Bihar to four-lane standard. The project cost is Rs.3936.05 crore.
The corridor is important because it connects an agricultural belt, a flood-prone riverine zone, and several logistics nodes in eastern Bihar. The upgrade is intended to improve year-round mobility for people, farm goods, and freight.
Background and earlier position
Eastern Bihar has faced recurring transport stress because roads in the region are vulnerable to flooding linked to the Kosi and Ganga river systems. The corridor has also suffered from repeated congestion, sharp curves, weak geometric design, and bottlenecks in dense urban and semi-urban stretches across Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar and Purnia districts.
The corridor also serves the Seemanchal region, where weak connectivity has long limited access to administrative, educational, and economic centres.
