What happened
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has reported the implementation status of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U) and the launch of PMAY-U 2.0. The update matters because urban housing remains a recurring governance issue: the scheme is designed to deliver pucca houses with basic civic amenities, while actual delivery depends on State and Union Territory implementation capacity, land availability, and beneficiary participation.
Background and earlier position
PMAY-U has been implemented since 25 June 2015 to provide all-weather pucca houses with basic civic amenities to eligible urban beneficiaries. The scheme period has been extended up to 30 September 2026 so that sanctioned houses can be completed without changing the funding pattern or implementation method.
Based on learnings from PMAY-U implementation, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched PMAY-U 2.0 with effect from 1 September 2024 as a refreshed Housing for All mission. The new phase is meant to support additional eligible urban beneficiaries over the next five years through four verticals: Beneficiary Led Construction, Affordable Housing in Partnership, Affordable Rental Housing, and Interest Subsidy Scheme.
