The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs rejected Metro Rail proposals for Coimbatore and Madurai in Tamil Nadu for a second time. The Ministry recommended Bus Rapid Transit Systems (BRTS) instead of Metro Rail.

In November, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs rejected the Metro Rail request for Coimbatore and Madurai. The Ministry’s stated reasons were:
- Metro Rail was not expected to deliver significant commuter time savings.
- Expected ridership was not strong enough to justify Metro Rail.
