Government reply in Lok Sabha reports expansion in wind capacity, power generation, and policy support for renewable energy
- The ministry informed the Lok Sabha that India’s wind energy sector expanded in installed capacity, generation, and supporting policy measures.
- The Global Wind Energy Council Report 2026 placed India 4th globally in wind energy installation till 31 December 2025.
India’s wind energy sector has added both capacity and generation, according to a written reply in the Lok Sabha by the Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik. The reply matters because wind power is not only a clean-energy source; it also tests India’s ability to build transmission, market, and regulatory systems that can absorb variable renewable energy at scale.
What happened
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said that, as of 30 June 2026, India’s total installed wind power capacity was 57,443 MW. The ministry also said wind power generation during FY 2025-26 reached 106 billion units.
UPSC can frame wind energy through installed capacity, contribution to the power mix, transmission evacuation, Renewable Purchase Obligation compliance, offshore wind policy, and the challenge of integrating variable renewable energy into the grid.
