CCTV surveillance being expanded across Indian Railways stations and passenger coaches

What happened

The Union Government, through the Ministry of Railways, communicated a plan to install CCTV surveillance systems across Indian Railways network locations, including railway stations, passenger coaches and other railway premises. The government stated that CCTV installation is being undertaken in a phased manner to strengthen passenger safety and enhance security surveillance. The government also reported existing rollout levels and AI-based video analytics features in deployed station cameras.

Background and earlier position

CCTV surveillance for security monitoring in rail infrastructure is an ongoing operational requirement for passenger safety. Within Indian Railways, CCTV systems at stations and on passenger coaches have been introduced earlier in phases and then expanded across zones, alongside upgrades in train technology and onboard monitoring for newer train rakes.

What changed now

The government reported measurable expansion progress up to June 2026: CCTV systems are provided at 3,215 railway stations and fitted on 13,409 passenger coaches. The government further stated that all operational Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat train rakes have already been equipped with CCTV cameras. For station deployments, the government stated that cameras are equipped with AI-based video analytics features including intrusion detection, loitering detection and fallen person detection, and reported incident detection outcomes for the 2023–2025 period and up to June 2026.
