What happened
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the 3rd and 4th line (multitracking) of the Ballari–Guntakal rail section in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, with a stated total project cost of about Rs. 1,264 crore.
Background and earlier position
Ballari–Guntakal is an Indian Railways rail section connecting Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Capacity constraints on such corridors can affect congestion, schedule reliability, and freight movement of bulk commodities.
What changed now
The approved intervention adds 3rd and 4th lines on the Ballari–Guntakal section. The government communication projects network expansion (about 46 km), connectivity expansion to about 99 villages (population about seven lakh), and additional freight traffic of 16.22 MTPA.
