What happened (CCEA approval for Ballari–Guntakal multi-tracking)
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a multi-tracking project for the Ballari–Guntakal rail section in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The approval covers the 3rd and 4th line addition planned with integrated planning under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
Background and earlier position
The Ballari–Guntakal rail corridor is already part of Indian Railways’ network and supports freight movement tied to mineral and industrial supply chains. Before the approval, the corridor operated within existing track capacity, which the government now seeks to expand to ease congestion and raise throughput for goods and services movement.
What changed now
CCEA approval changes the policy-to-implementation pathway by sanctioning capacity augmentation of the Ballari–Guntakal section through 3rd and 4th line multi-tracking. The government frames the project as providing seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods, and services and as an intervention aligned with PM Gati Shakti integrated planning and stakeholder consultation.
