What happened: MoPSW updates on Sagarmala progress, connectivity plans, and assistance to Andhra Pradesh

MoPSW provided a consolidated update on Sagarmala programme implementation through pillar-wise counts and costs, government measures to enhance major and other than major ports operational performance, and the status of port connectivity projects. The update also included MoPSW-sanctioned financial assistance in Andhra Pradesh for projects spanning passenger jetties, fishing harbours, port modernisation and skill development.

What exists under Sagarmala: five pillars and pillar-wise status

Sagarmala is a central sector scheme of MoPSW with a stated target to promote port-led development in the country. MoPSW provides financial assistance for projects across five pillars: port modernization, port connectivity, port-led industrialization, coastal community development, and coastal shipping & inland water transport. MoPSW shared pillar-wise progress based on completed and under implementation projects (counts and costs are provided as government figures).

What changed alongside Sagarmala: port capacity, efficiency reforms, and cargo throughput

MoPSW stated that government measures aim to enhance port capacity, improve operational efficiency, and reduce vessel turnaround time at major ports. Infrastructure development is described as including construction of new berths and terminals, mechanization and modernization of existing assets, and capital dredging to deepen drafts for larger vessels, along with road and rail connectivity and supporting infrastructure such as parking plazas. MoPSW linked process streamlining to implementation of One Nation One Port Process (ONOP) for improved operational efficiency. MoPSW also reported growth in cargo handling capacity of Major and Other than Major Ports (OTMP) from around 2013–14 levels to a higher figure as of March 2026.
