Status of implementation of PMGSY and targets for FY 2026–27

What happened (PMGSY progress and FY 2026–27 plan)

The Ministry of Rural Development reported completed rural road and bridge works under PMGSY during FY 2025–26 and then announced the implementation plan and targets for FY 2026–27. During FY 2025–26, 2,905 roads covering 15,647.78 km and 1,042 bridges were completed across India, along with all-weather road connectivity for 93 eligible habitations.

For FY 2026–27, the implementation plan focuses on timely completion of ongoing works (with a stated exception for PMGSY-II), up-gradation of rural roads, and strengthening maintenance for assets already constructed. The plan links project sanctioning (including under PMGSY-IV), state/union territory maintenance responsibilities, and digital maintenance management via the eMARG platform with a three-tier quality assurance approach that uses geo-tagged inspections and monitoring through regular review and field inspection mechanisms.

Background and earlier position (PMGSY verticals and closure/extension)

PMGSY-I was launched as a one-time special intervention to provide single all-weather road connectivity to eligible unconnected habitations in the core network. Under PMGSY-I, 1,62,876 habitations were provided connectivity, and the scheme was closed on 31.03.2025. A timeline extension was provided up to 31.03.2027 to complete balance works and payments.

Subsequent verticals were added under the PMGSY ambit: PMGSY-II targets up-gradation of 50,000 km of existing rural roads, and PMGSY-III aims consolidation of 1,25,000 km through routes and major rural links connecting habitations, including links to Gramin Agricultural Markets (GrAMs), higher secondary schools, and hospitals. PMGSY-IV was launched in September 2024 to provide connectivity to 25,000 unconnected habitations by the year 2029.
