Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, informed the Rajya Sabha that the Government of India is implementing focused initiatives to strengthen livestock development, improve dairy productivity, enhance animal health, and promote sustainable rural livelihoods. The Minister linked these goals to flagship schemes such as the National Livestock Mission (NLM), Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF), Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), and Livestock Health & Disease Control Programme (LHDCP).

The Government’s emphasis includes infrastructure creation, scientific breeding, fodder development, disease control, and support for entrepreneurship in livestock and dairy. The Rajya Sabha reply also provided scheme-wise funding releases, state-level measures for scientific pig breeding and processing, and vaccination and Central-assistance details for major animal diseases.

What happened (scheme-wise actions and numbers)

The Minister stated that the Government supports livestock sector interventions through the National Livestock Mission, AHIDF, RGM, and LHDCP. The Government’s reported coverage spans infrastructure, breeding, disease control, fodder development, and entrepreneurship.

Assam-focused entrepreneurship under NLM and AHIDF included support for modern pig breeding farms and pork processing units. The Government reported the following releases for pig and livestock projects:

During the last three years, subsidy of ₹4.98 crore was released for 50 livestock projects, including 23 pig breeding farms, under the Entrepreneurship Development Programme of NLM. Under AHIDF, ₹1.44 crore was released as interest subvention for eight projects, including one pig breeding farm. The Government also stated that ₹1.80 crore was sanctioned for establishing a Pig Semen Collection and Processing Laboratory in Assam for artificial insemination and genetic improvement.
