What happened: Census 2027 preparatory and execution schedule
The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the phased timelines, digital tools, training progress, and funding released for Census 2027. The Ministry of Home Affairs also linked census execution to deployed digital systems and scheduled rounds for hard-to-enumerate regions.
Phase 1: Houselisting and Housing Census
Houselisting and Housing Census (Census 2027 first phase) has already been completed in 31 States/UTs. For the remaining States/UTs, the first phase is scheduled to be completed by September 2026.
Phase 2: Population Enumeration for selected regions and revisional round
Population Enumeration (Census 2027 second phase) is scheduled for specific difficult regions as notified in the Gazette of India on 3 August 2026.
