The Ministry of Home Affairs has started Self-Enumeration for the Houselisting and Housing Census under Phase I of Census 2027 in Tamil Nadu and Tripura. The exercise matters because Census operations feed population planning, housing assessment, and welfare design, while the digital workflow changes how enumeration is carried out.

What happened

Self-Enumeration began on 18 July 2026 in Tamil Nadu and Tripura. The Self-Enumeration window will remain open until 31 July 2026, and the corresponding house-to-house field enumeration will run from 1 August 2026 to 30 August 2026. Residents can use the official portal se.census.gov.in for Self-Enumeration.

Background and earlier position

The Census Act, 1948 provides the confidentiality framework for census information. Census data are used only for statistical purposes and development planning, not for individual identification or enforcement. Traditionally, census work relies on door-to-door enumeration; Census 2027 retains that method while adding digital tools.
