What happened: PMRC Scheme for 2026-27 under NEP 2020
The Ministry of Education has linked the Government of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 goal of research and innovation with the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme. The ministry stated that PMRC is designed to attract and engage distinguished Indian-origin researchers, scientists, and professionals with international research experience to strengthen India’s higher education and research ecosystem.
The Government of India reported concrete implementation indicators and budget allocation for the PMRC Scheme for 2026-27:
The scheme provides fellowships under three categories: Research Chair, Senior Fellow, and Young Research Fellow. PMRC identifies seven institutions as Lead Institutions to support the host-and-engagement model.

The ministry also stated that the Government of India has made a Rs 200 crore provision for the PMRC Scheme for 2026-27.
