The Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, organised an awareness session for exporters on European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (EU CBAM) regulations at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi. The session was conducted in collaboration with the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB) and the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC).

The session had participation of around 100 participants, including exporters and industry stakeholders. The organisers aimed to improve exporter awareness and preparedness for evolving EU regulatory requirements under CBAM.

The session included technical discussions and an interactive Question and Answer format. The technical sessions covered: an overview of the EU CBAM framework; its applicability and covered products; exporter obligations; calculation of embedded emissions (emissions included in the product’s production); data collection and reporting requirements; and accreditation and verification mechanisms (systems that ensure emissions data and reports can be checked credibly). Practical case studies were discussed for the iron and steel sector and the aluminium sector.

Government and institutional speakers underlined the need for timely readiness. Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce Shri Amit Verma emphasised that Indian exporters should be informed and prepared for sustainability-related requirements in international markets, and that the Department is engaged with industry to address concerns and facilitate practical solutions. NABCB CEO Shri N. Venkateswaran underlined the importance of a credible accreditation and verification ecosystem for confidence in emissions-related data used for CBAM compliance. EEPC Chairman Shri Pankaj Chadha stressed awareness across the export value chain, including availability of emissions-related data from suppliers and other stakeholders, supported by effective verification mechanisms.
