What happened: Unarvu SHG created and operated a catering unit using NBCFDC microfinance support
Beena, a member of Unarvu Self Help Group (SHG) in Kerala, received microfinance assistance under the NBCFDC Micro Finance Scheme. The scheme support enabled Unarvu SHG to overcome capital constraints and establish a catering enterprise. The SHG established the catering unit and it began operating in 2022, following the group’s receipt of ₹5 lakh assistance.
Background and earlier position: limited access to capital restricted start-up and scaling
Before receiving the assistance, Beena and the members of Unarvu SHG faced financial constraints in establishing and expanding their catering business. Limited access to capital restricted the purchase of essential equipment and raw materials and also constrained operational capacity for the proposed enterprise. The SHG had commitment to collective entrepreneurship, but the absence of adequate financial resources limited both the start-up and scaling of the catering unit.
What changed now: ₹5 lakh microfinance support enabled enterprise establishment and operations
Unarvu SHG received ₹5 lakh microfinance assistance under the NBCFDC Micro Finance Scheme, reported as a turning point in 2021. With the assistance, the SHG invested in resources required to establish the catering enterprise. The SHG established the catering unit and began operations in 2022 through collective effort and shared responsibility among women members.
