What happened: Kerala decides to approach the Supreme Court
Kerala’s Public Works Department Minister P.K. Basheer said Kerala will approach the Supreme Court against an order that restricts construction near national highways. Basheer stated that Kerala’s concerns will be presented directly to the Supreme Court.
Basheer described the construction limits as follows:
Residential buildings are barred within 40 metres of the midpoint on either side of national highways.Commercial establishments are barred within 75 metres of the midpoint on either side of national highways.
Background and earlier position: Supreme Court rationale and compliance timeline
Basheer linked the Supreme Court restrictions to deaths in a road accident in north India. Basheer also said the Supreme Court directed States to notify the restrictions within 60 days in line with Indian Roads Congress norms (road-planning and design guidelines).
