What happened
The United Nations has warned that more than 500 people are feared dead after reports of two large shipwrecks off Myanmar since late June. Preliminary information suggests that both vessels departed from Rakhine State and carried mostly members of Myanmar’s Muslim Rohingya minority.
The development is important because it is not only a maritime disaster. It is also part of the wider Rohingya displacement crisis, in which vulnerable passengers often attempt dangerous sea journeys to escape insecurity, deprivation, or statelessness.
