Former India women’s hockey captain Asunta Lakra has approached the Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India seeking intervention in allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and victimisation inside hockey administration. The issue matters for UPSC because it links sports governance with women’s safety, institutional accountability, and grievance redressal.
What happened
Lakra has written to the Sports Ministry, the Sports Authority of India, and other authorities. She alleges that people accused of misconduct are being protected while women athletes who raise concerns face threats.
Lakra had earlier informed authorities about allegations involving Jharkhand hockey figures, including Sudhir Golla. Lakra says intimidation followed after she raised those concerns.
What Hockey India said
Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey said he will speak to both sides to resolve the matter. He also said that women’s dignity and respect remain priorities.
