Hockey India faced a controversy over a change in Indian hockey teams’ jerseys, including new saffron-coloured uniforms. Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey said the jersey decision is not necessarily permanent and could be reversed after a review.

Dilip Tirkey said Hockey India would seek feedback from players and staff after the World Cup and discuss pros and cons before taking a decision. Dilip Tirkey added that any alteration—either returning to the old design or adopting a different one—would require unanimous approval, including full consent from Hockey India’s Executive Board and the teams.

The dispute included competing statements within Hockey India leadership about who was consulted and whether formal approval procedures were followed. Dilip Tirkey said he had publicly clarified earlier that the jersey change was a sporting decision intended to keep focus on the upcoming World Cup.

Dilip Tirkey also stated that he later wrote to the Executive Board asking for clarification, because he claimed the change was implemented without his prior knowledge and without being placed before the Executive Board for discussion. Dilip Tirkey stated that the Government of Odisha asked him to explain the matter, and he requested written details on the basis, the process, and the circumstances of approval.
