Former India women’s hockey captain Asunta Lakra has sought intervention from the Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India, and Indian Olympic Association president P.T. Usha over allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and victimisation of women hockey players.
The complaint is significant because it points to a larger governance problem: whether sports federations and related institutions can ensure a safe environment, fair inquiry, and protection from retaliation for athletes who raise misconduct allegations.
What happened
Lakra said she had earlier brought allegations against a Jharkhand hockey figure to the state government. She now alleges threats and intimidation for speaking up.
Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey said he would speak to both sides and hoped the matter would be resolved amicably.
Tirkey also said dignity and respect for women are a top priority and noted that action had already been taken against an accused official, including removal from the Under-18 national team.
