What happened
The Sports Ministry has directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to examine allegations raised inside Hockey India (HI) that include sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, and claims of institutional protection for the accused. The ministry asked the IOA to form a neutral, fair, and transparent committee to probe allegations attributed to former India captain Asunta Lakra, and it also sought clarification from Hockey India.
The ministry’s step follows a separate request from Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey, who argued that an internal inquiry could raise concerns about impartiality because both the complainant and the respondent are on the HI Executive Board.

The immediate governance issue is not only the allegations themselves but the question of who should investigate them. A sports federation handling complaints involving its own office-bearers can face conflict-of-interest concerns, especially when the complainant and the accused are linked to the same decision-making body.
The Sports Ministry’s intervention indicates that the matter is being treated as extending beyond routine internal processes within Hockey India.
