What happened: AITA EGM in New Delhi to ratify a new constitution
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) is scheduled to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) in New Delhi on Sunday. The EGM will be used to ratify a new AITA constitution. A set of governance clauses is expected to be debated during the meeting, and Delhi High Court interim orders dated June 18 can condition how EGM-related actions play out.
What changed now: the three contested clauses expected to take centre stage
The AITA EGM is expected to focus on three contested areas within the proposed AITA constitution and related rules. These areas concern executive representation for athletes, constitutional interpretation of “may contest” in relation to age limits and bye-laws, and tenure calculation with eligibility requirements connected to age at nomination.
1) Executive Committee composition: athlete-related representation
A major dispute expected at the AITA EGM is the composition of the AITA Executive Committee, including how many seats should be reserved for Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit and for Athlete representatives. A Justice (Retd.) Gita Mittal-led panel has proposed a different seat distribution than the distribution being contested.
