What happened
Delhi High Court-appointed administrator Justice (Retd.) Gita Mittal objected to the All India Tennis Association (AITA) interim executive committee's decision to appoint an observer for an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM). The EGM is expected to consider constitutional amendments so that AITA can align its constitution with the National Sports Governance Act, 2025 and the National Sports Governance Rules, 2026.
Justice Mittal said that, after the High Court had appointed her as an independent person, the AITA interim executive committee's decision to bring in another observer was a direct affront to the court. AITA's interim executive committee had appointed Justice Ashish J. Desai (Retd.), former Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, and described the step as part of good governance and transparency.

The dispute sits inside a broader effort to revise AITA's constitutional framework. An administrator-led committee had already proposed amendments and circulated a consolidated draft for members. According to Justice Mittal, that draft had already incorporated comments from different factions and recorded reasons for disagreements.
AITA's interim executive committee also questioned the observer-related expenses. Justice Mittal's office had proposed four observers at ₹1.5 lakh per observer per session, while AITA called that expenditure extravagant and suggested a lower alternative.
