What happened: AITA rejects Justice Gita Mittal’s five-SOM EC proposal
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) rejected a recommendation from a Justice (Retd.) Gita Mittal-led panel to create five Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit (SOM) roles in AITA’s 15-member Executive Committee (EC). At an Extraordinary General Meeting in New Delhi, AITA members voted to have two SOM roles rather than five.
AITA members said two SOM roles are the minimum number mandated under the National Sports Governance Act. AITA also voted to keep four women on the EC instead of five women proposed by Justice Gita Mittal.
The AITA EC structure reported for the meeting includes positions such as president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and two joint-secretaries, with one joint-secretary position reserved for a woman.
The AITA General Body voting model reported for affiliated state associations includes two delegates per state, and each delegate having two votes, which differs from Justice Gita Mittal’s suggested “one vote per state” approach.
AITA also kept a decision pending on the EC upper age limit, with the option of fixing it at 70 or raising it to 75. A Delhi High Court hearing is scheduled for August 14, and September 30 is set as the deadline for fresh elections under the new constitution.
