What happened: EC deferred Delhi’s draft electoral roll publication under SIR
The Election Commission of India (EC) issued an order deferring the publication of the draft electoral roll for Delhi under Special Intensive Revision (SIR) (a time-bound, focused revision of voter lists). EC extended the draft publication timeline to August 31 (from August 24).
EC scheduled the final publication of the electoral roll for November 4. EC kept the claims and objections window open from August 31 to September 30. After that, EC’s notice and disposal phases continue until October 29.
EC said the deferment followed a request from the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer for more time to complete polling-station rationalisation. EC linked this rationalisation to a booth-size cap of 1,200 voters per polling booth by shifting electors.
Background: polling-station rationalisation and enumeration tasks under SIR
Polling-station rationalisation under SIR involved identifying polling stations that exceeded the 1,200-voter cap using an existing higher threshold and then shifting electors to ensure the maximum limit per booth. The process was also connected with door-to-door enumeration work for updating and verifying details for voter list revision.
