India’s national chief coach Vijay Sharma has said Mirabai Chanu should treat the Glasgow Commonwealth Games as a stepping stone, not as the event for an all-out peak. The coach’s position is that Chanu can target Commonwealth gold while keeping the larger objective of an Asian Games medal in mind.
What happened
The note says Mirabai Chanu is competing in the 48kg category and wants her fourth Commonwealth medal of any colour while staying injury-free. Her longer-term priority is a medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Vijay Sharma is quoted as saying that a total in the 190–195kg range should be enough for Commonwealth gold and that a Commonwealth gold remains valuable even if it is not won at personal-best levels. The note also says Chanu had totalled 205kg at national championships earlier in the year, but she withdrew from the Asian championships because of a shoulder injury.
Background and earlier position
Mirabai Chanu has been one of India’s most successful weightlifters and a regular medal contender for the country. The Indian camp is using a familiar elite-sport model: manage injury risk, preserve competition readiness, and sequence peak form around the most important event in the calendar.
