What happened
Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan rejected the United Democratic Front (UDF) government’s claim that Kerala is facing a debt crisis. He argued that public debt increased more slowly during the Left Democratic Front (LDF) decade-long tenure than under the previous UDF government.
Vijayan released a “White Paper of Facts” prepared by the AKG Centre for Research and Studies and handed its first copy to CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan.
Why the issue matters
The dispute concerns how Kerala’s fiscal position is presented to the public, how debt trends are interpreted, and whether state financial data is being used fairly in political debate.
