What happened
Gurugram has seen a crackdown on alleged illegal paying-guest and other commercial uses inside residential colonies, especially in DLF City phases 1 to 5. The enforcement action follows a long court dispute over building by-law violations, commercial use in residential plots, and alleged misuse of EWS plots.
Tenants who had rented apartments or rooms for short- or medium-term stays say they were asked to leave with very short notice, and in some cases belongings were left inside sealed premises.
UPSC may frame Gurugram’s sealing drives as a governance problem involving planning violations, weak rental supply, and enforcement fairness. The issue connects judicial intervention, land-use regulation, and the absence of adequate formal rental housing for mobile urban workers.
