What happened: NCSK missed-call grievance facility for sanitation workers
The National Commission for Safai Karmacharis (NCSK) announced a missed-call facility so sanitation workers can register grievances without needing complex procedures. NCSK Vice-Chairperson Hardeep Singh Gill said NCSK will follow up on grievance calls and address issues in a time-bound manner. The commission scheduled the launch of the facility for August 23, on NCSK’s foundation day.
Background and earlier position: NCSK’s focus on making complaints easier and safer
NCSK has been examining steps to improve grievance reporting for sanitation workers. In the same statement, Vice-Chairperson Hardeep Singh Gill indicated that NCSK is studying measures such as making complaints easier to report, addressing the situation of contract-based workers through regularisation, and coordinating with Union ministries so directives promote dignified and safe working conditions.
What changed now: a low-friction missed-call channel for grievance registration
The missed-call grievance facility is a specific change in grievance redressal design. A missed-call channel typically reduces barriers for workers who may face issues like difficulty accessing formal portals or completing lengthy complaint forms. NCSK’s stated intent is not only to record complaints through missed calls, but also to follow up and address issues within a time-bound process.
