What happened: SUY enabled a shift to self-employment
Satish Kumar, a sanitation worker from Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, shifted from contractual sanitation work to self-employment after receiving assistance under the Swachhta Udyami Yojana (SUY) component of the NAMASTE scheme. A Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation awareness camp provided the information that enabled Satish Kumar to apply for the scheme-linked support.
Background and earlier position (before SUY support)
Before SUY assistance, Satish Kumar worked as a contractual sanitation worker with reported earnings of about ₹13,000–₹15,000 per month. The reported constraints included limited earning capacity under contractual work and limited ability to purchase mechanized sanitation equipment independently, which reduced his options for savings and long-term financial security.
What changed now: loan + capital subsidy + mechanized equipment
After learning about SUY at a Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation awareness camp, Satish Kumar applied and received a loan of ₹5.91 lakh from Canara Bank along with an upfront capital subsidy of ₹3.64 lakh from National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development (NSKFDC). The total project cost was ₹9.55 lakh. With this support, Satish Kumar procured a sewer suction machine and started operating it as a self-employed owner-operator.
